01. We are so Blessed 3:55

Each summer a cultural exchange event is held to reflect the diverse background of the first year and transfer students of UCSD. For this presentation I accompany my brother as one of the Azteca Dancers from his dance group Danza Oceolotl based in San Diego, CA. The Aztec Dance Tradition includes singing and music as part of the expression and so I was asked to share a song for the students.
I began to reflect on what an honorable and special role these students had for in time they would return to their communities from around the globe and be the ones nurturing and leading the way…I thought what a blessing to help heal the world by becoming an educated and dedicated person. This was my inspiration for this song.
It has become a prayer in motion for the world to join in for many reasons.

02. Que Vivan las Adelitas (Long live the Adelitas) 6:37

My Comadre, Josie Talamantes asked me to join her as she gave the keynote speech at
Chicano Park, San Diego, CA for the 39th Anniversary (April 25, 2009) honoring all the women who supported the development and the life of the park through out the years from the Logan Heights Community. I was asked to sing a song for this event so I was touched by the spirit of inspiration…and since the theme was in honor of the Adelitas of Chicano Park this is what came. Now it has become a reoccurring theme in respect to the Women of the world who defend, support and sacrifice for the sake of truth and justice of our communities.
Note: The name “Adelita” is symbolic of the women who fought side by side with their husbands/men in the Mexican Revolution of the early 1900’s.

03. Goddess of Beauty 6:00

06. Healer of the Heart 6:56

This song was created with the thought of embracing our inner voice as a valuable tool of empowerment and self healing. This song/video reveals glimpses of troubling times regarding any type of abusive situations. I chose some of the cultural elements of my heritage as a setting to connect the artistry of healing, visuals, music, and lyrics. When all brought together the impression would leave you with this message of awareness that each of us has the capability of becoming our own healer. In the 1990’s the CA ARTS COUNCIL gave me a grant to tell this story in a music video format. This song has been sitting on the shelf since 1997. This was the opportunity to release it with the other songs. You can view HEALER OF THE HEART on this website.

Healer of the Heart

Intro: Floating Voices
Verse: 1
There was a time I needed to be healed; there was a place to be revealed.
It came in a dream one night; inside I was falling apart,
I prayed for myself with all my heart.

In a whisper she spoke my name, she said, “With love anything can change”
I felt power from her soul, emotions became aware there her face appeared to me,
A vision beyond compare…

Bridge:
I cried out in misery tell me what to do teach me what I need,
So I can heal someone too.
Chorus:
You are the healer, she said, you are the healer of the heart.
You’ve been touched by love, you are the healer of the heart.
You’ve got the power to give our world a new start,
You’ve been touched by love,
You are the healer of the heart.
Sub Chorus:
You, you, you, you, you, you .
I new this was special; you are the healer of the heart.
Something sacred, you are the healer of the heart.
Just like a new born baby, no longer crying in the dark.
I was so lonely; you are the healer of the heart.
Bridge:
I cried out in ecstasy you showed me the way,
You taught me what I needed to face another day.
You are the healer, she said, you are the healer of the heart.
You’ve got the power to give our world a new start.
You’ve been touched by love, you are the healer of the heart.

10. Back to Me 6:18

This song tells of the most challenging chapter in my life. A divorce, losing my sister, my two in-laws, my mom and dad and I almost lost my home all under a 2 year time frame. I took a hiatus from my work as a performing artist and became a care giver for both my parents until they passed on to the other side. The lessons I learned were about coping with the fact that I was losing my father to Alzheimer’s and my mother to Parkinson’s condition. Thank God there were programs available to give me the hands on skills to care for them with patience, compassion, humbleness, and keeping the faith. I honestly know that because I was there for them during this time in their life all that I gave came back to me in the form of love and inner peace. I had to now learn to love and take care of myself and keep moving forward in their name. (I would do it again…with honor)

11. “Mal Hombre” (Bad Man) 5:17

As a child I was exposed to a variety of music. My parents would have their weekend parties and play their favorite music over and over again. One of them being Lydia Mendoza. The album covers would be laid out all over the living room floor and I would talk and sing to the artist on the album cover. In respect to Lydia Mendoza there was something about the quality of her sweet melancholy voice and the sound of her twelve string guitar. This left an impression. Many years later as an adult I was given the opportunity to perform with Luis Valdez as part of the Teatro Campesino Ensemble in the production of CORRIDOS! I was given a solo piece to perform and Luis selected, MAL HOMBRE. (I was thrilled!) The history of how the song came to be is interesting. Back in the early 1930’s Lydia would tour and perform with her family as a way of life. (Survival) Back in those days it was unheard of for a woman to be in the music business. But it was Lydia’s calling. As a young girl Lydia would collect gum wrappers which would have lyrics and various writings on these gum wrappers and this is where she was inspired by the lyrics to MAL HOMBRE and the rest is history. This song tells the story of a naïve young woman who was manipulated into losing her innocence to a man with selfish intentions. ( To use and abuse) Now when I sing this song I dedicate it to those who represent Corporate Greed.

12. Somos Hechos de Maiz (We are made of corn)

Corn also known as MAIZ is symbolic of the Indigenous people of the Americas. The only peoples in the history of humanity to have created their own food-maiz-a food so special that it is what virtually unites not simply this continent, but this era. In this respect, it can also be said that Indigenous peoples laid the seeds to and cultivated their/our own philosophy based on maiz. Three maiz-based concepts-In Lak Ech, Panche Be and Hunab Ku- in effect- constitute the essence of who we are or who we can be; human beings connected to each other, to all of life and to all of creation. Part of creation; not outside of it. This is the definition of what it means to be human. (Writings shared from Roberto Dr. Cintli Rodriguez)
